SAS Experience

The Big Idea of this unit is the relationship between the visible and the invisible by exploring how internal qualities can be expressed outwardly through art. The essential question is, "How do your invisible superpowers help us with visible problems throughout the day?" In this lesson, students examined the unique attributes that make each of them a “superhero” in their everyday lives, focusing on personal strengths such as kindness, resilience, creativity, and courage. Through class discussions and reflective activities, students identified how these often unseen qualities not only shape their identities but also positively impact those around them.

Building on this understanding, students translated their internal strengths into visual form by designing and constructing personalized superhero costumes and accessories. These creations served as symbolic “armor,” representing the power they carry within. Students were encouraged to think critically and intentionally about their design choices. They considered color, shape, texture, and symbolism. In this unit the students worked with materials such as clay, cardboard, acrylic paint, and markers.

This process not only supported artistic skill development across multiple media, but also fostered self-awareness, creative problem-solving, and a deeper appreciation for the invisible qualities that define who we are.
